More Than a Thousand Years of History

Rila Monastery was founded during the tenth century by Saint Ivan of Rila, Bulgaria's most revered saint and hermit. His spiritual teachings attracted followers who gradually established a monastic community in the mountains.

Throughout the centuries, the monastery became an important center of education, literature, and spirituality. During the Ottoman period, it played a crucial role in preserving Bulgarian language, culture, and national consciousness.

Although the monastery suffered fires and destruction on several occasions, it was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. Most of the present-day complex dates from the nineteenth century.

Remarkable Architecture and Art

The monastery's architecture is among the finest examples of the Bulgarian National Revival style. The residential buildings surround a spacious courtyard dominated by the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin.
